Frequently asked questions
Everything you want to know about KiloTax, mileage tracking and vehicle expense deductions in Canada.
Does KiloTax follow Canadian tax rules?
Yes. KiloTax applies the rules of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec: business-use percentage, leasing and interest limits, sales taxes (GST/HST, QST) and reports organized according to forms T2125, T777 and TP-59. Amounts are estimates to be reviewed by a professional.
Is trip logging automatic?
Yes. Once you allow location access, KiloTax can detect and record your trips, even when your phone is locked. You stay in control: every trip can be marked business or personal, edited or deleted.
Where is my data stored?
KiloTax is designed, built and hosted in Canada. Much of your data stays on your phone; account and fleet data are hosted on servers in Canada. We never sell your personal information.
Is there a free version?
Yes. Self-employed workers and employees can use KiloTax for free for up to 15 trips per month. Subscriptions unlock unlimited trips, tax reports and additional vehicles.
Does KiloTax provide tax advice?
No. KiloTax provides estimates for information purposes, calculated from your data and public tax rules. Always have your figures reviewed by a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or a tax specialist before filing.
Do trips between home and work count?
No. In Canada, your regular trips between home and your usual place of work are considered personal, even if you are entitled to deductions. Only trips made for your work count: visiting a client, going to a job site, attending an outside meeting, or travelling from one work location to another. Example: you leave home, drive to the office, then to a client, and back to the office. The home → office trip is personal; the office → client → office trips are business. KiloTax keeps commuting trips separate so they don’t skew your calculations.
Which phones does KiloTax work on?
KiloTax will be available on iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play).
Does the app use a lot of battery?
Tracking is optimized to limit battery use: location is only used during your trips. You can pause tracking at any time.
Can I use KiloTax outside Canada?
For now, KiloTax is available in Canada only, with Canadian federal and provincial tax rules.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings, then Privacy and legal, then Delete my account. You can also make the request by email; see our Delete my account page.
Do prices include taxes?
No. Prices are in Canadian dollars, before the taxes that apply in your province.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. You cancel from your App Store or Google Play account, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period.
What happens if I add a vehicle during the year?
With an annual subscription, the price difference is prorated for the remaining days. The amount is shown to you before you add the vehicle.
Can I combine the Employee and Self-employed profiles?
Yes, with a single account. Each vehicle is linked to one use, and each subscription is billed separately.
